Executive summary · one-page brief

A Hard Fork Activates — and a Forecast Meets Its Outcome

Cardano's Van Rossem hard fork — the first ratified entirely through on-chain governance, by SPOs, DReps and the Constitutional Committee — enacted exactly on schedule at 21:44:51 UTC on 18 Jul 2026, and Protocol Version 11 is still what the network runs 39 days later. It landed on a short-heavy derivatives book, with the 100K-100M ADA wallet cohort at its highest since Feb 2023, and one analyst forecast a violent break in either direction. Neither trigger level held: ADA crossed both within nine days, and the larger rally that eventually followed arrived five weeks late, moving with the wider crypto market rather than resolving the squeeze.

Bottom line

The fork and its governance check out at primary sources, and Protocol Version 11 is what Cardano runs today. The squeeze one analyst forecast beforehand did not resolve as framed — the market crossed both his trigger levels without a sustained move in either direction.

Reframe

The most useful fact this record turns up is not which side of the binary broke. It's that neither did, and the larger rally that eventually followed was market-wide, arriving five weeks after the fork alongside a comparable move in Bitcoin.

In Order governance first, market events after

  1. 16 Jun 2026Van Rossem hard-fork-initiation governance action submitted to Mainnet, Epoch 637.
  2. 13 Jul 2026Ratified by SPOs, DReps and the Constitutional Committee — the first Cardano fork decided entirely through on-chain governance.
  3. 14 Jul 2026Santiment data reported: the 100K-100M ADA wallet cohort holds more than 25.6B ADA, the highest since Feb 2023.
  4. ~17 Jul 2026CryptoNews's Ahmed Barakat publishes the short-squeeze binary: below $0.160 toward a $0.1465 target, above $0.170 forces short covering.

  9. 11 Aug 2026The 1M-10M ADA band's wallet count falls from 2,370 to 2,340 over the prior nine days.
  10. 17 Aug 2026Intersect finalises a two-phase Dijkstra roadmap: Leios targeted Q4 2026, Peras Q2 2027.
  11. 19-22 Aug 2026ADA rallies 45.8% to a 22 Aug peak of $0.2543, alongside a 21.3% rally in Bitcoin.
  12. 26 Aug 2026A live chain query confirms Protocol Version 11 is still active at Epoch 651; ADA trades around $0.2059.

Two ADA rallies sit in this record, nine days and five weeks after the fork respectively, and they are not the same kind of event. The first (21-22 Jul) came within days of the fork and briefly outpaced Bitcoin by more than two to one — consistent with the short-heavy book unwinding, exactly as the pre-fork setup described. The second (19-22 Aug) arrived five weeks later, moved almost as hard in Bitcoin as in ADA, and has no clean line back to the fork at all.

  • 5.4%ADA vs Bitcoin's 2.0%, fork to 22 Jul close — Cardano-specific
  • 45.8%ADA vs Bitcoin's 21.3%, 19-22 Aug — market-wide

The Analyst's Binary, Named reported, not adopted

Writing for CryptoNews on 17 Jul 2026, Ahmed Barakat argued that Cardano's setup — a short-heavy derivatives book meeting record whale accumulation — meant “the next directional move is likely to be violent in whichever direction it resolves.” His own binary: a drop through $0.160 would open a path toward $0.1465, a Murrey Math support level; a break above $0.170 would force short sellers to close positions. His own snapshot of the setup: ADA at $0.158 (down 1.39% on the day), long/short ratio 0.58, open interest up 4% to $421M in 48 hours, and a 4-hour RSI of 46.92, below its 50.95 moving average — “bearish-neutral,” in his words, not oversold. This is his argument, reported by name, not this page's own reading of the chart.

  • $0.170crossed within 3 days — no sustained follow-through
  • $0.160crossed within 9 days — bearish target not reached

A Whipsaw, Not a Squeeze ADA against Bitcoin, the same days

It did not resolve the way it was framed. ADA closed above $0.170 within three days of the fork (21-22 Jul), then reversed and closed below $0.160 within nine (27-28 Jul) — crossing both of Barakat's trigger levels in opposite directions, with no sustained move holding either side. The bearish target came close without arriving: the window's low, $0.1542 (28 Jul), sits 5.2% above $0.1465. Momentum in the days around the fork behaved as the short-heavy setup would predict — ADA moved roughly twice Bitcoin's size on the way up and nearly three times Bitcoin's size on the way down — a heavier, more volatile book than the wider market, not a clean resolution in either direction.

Volatility, Compared ADA and Bitcoin, the same three windows

WindowADABitcoin
Fork to 22 Jul close+5.4%+2.0%
22 Jul close to 28 Jul low-12.0%-4.5%
19 Aug to 22 Aug peak+45.8%+21.3%

The comparison is the honest version of “did the squeeze happen.” In the nine days immediately around the fork, ADA was consistently more volatile than Bitcoin in both directions — a short-heavy book unwinding, as the pre-fork setup predicted. The August rally is a different shape entirely: ADA still moved harder than Bitcoin, but Bitcoin's own 21.3% move over the identical three days rules out a Cardano-specific explanation. Two real patterns, five weeks apart, and only the first has anything to do with Van Rossem or the squeeze Barakat forecast.

What Van Rossem Actually Changed Plutus costs, five CIPs, intra-Conway

  • Governance · first of its kind

    Named for a Community Builder

    ratified 13 Jul

    • The first Cardano hard fork ratified entirely through on-chain governance — SPOs, DReps and the Constitutional Committee, with no founding entity steering it.
    • The Cardano Constitution required at least 85% of stake pools, by active stake, to have upgraded their node software before the boundary.
    • Named for Max van Rossem, a Dutch Cardano community builder who co-led the Constitutional Committee Election Working Group; he died in October 2025.
  • Technical payload

    PV11, Intra-Conway

    five CIPs delivered

    • An intra-era hard fork — Protocol Version 10 to 11 within the existing Conway ledger era, no era transition.
    • Five CIPs land at once: modular exponentiation (0109), a dropList function (0132), BLS12-381 multi-scalar multiplication for onchain zero-knowledge proofs (0133), a constant-time Array type (0138), and a native Value type for multi-asset handling (0153).
    • All Plutus built-in functions become available consistently across V1, V2 and V3 scripts.

The Roadmap It Feeds Dijkstra: Leios, then Peras

A month after the fork, Intersect finalised the scope of Cardano's next era. Phase 1, targeted for Q4 2026, establishes the Dijkstra ledger era and activates Linear Leios — Input Output's own stated target is a five-to-twentyfold increase in base-layer throughput — alongside Nested Transactions and Plutus V4 groundwork. Phase 2, targeted for Q2 2027, activates Ouroboros Peras, a further intra-era hard fork aimed at faster settlement finality rather than higher throughput. Both dates are stated as targets, not guarantees, subject to testing, ecosystem readiness and a further governance vote.

The Whale Cohort, in Pieces different bands, not one series

No single dated source tracks the original 100K-100M ADA band continuously past its 13 Jul reading. What exists instead is several separately-banded reports: wallets holding 100M-1B ADA added more than 240M ADA over five days to around 14.5B by 3 Aug, coinciding with ADA's own price recovery. A narrower band, 1M-10M ADA, moved the other way soon after — its wallet count fell from 2,370 to 2,340 between 2 and 11 Aug, which analyst Ali Martinez read as large holders taking profit. These are not the same cohort as the original 25.6B figure, and this page does not merge them into one trend line the data does not support.

So What the fork holds; the forecast doesn't resolve

Where it lands

Van Rossem is real, governance-ratified, and still what Cardano runs: Protocol Version 11, confirmed live 39 days after enactment. The short squeeze one analyst forecast around it did not resolve as framed — ADA crossed both his trigger levels within nine days without a sustained move in either direction, and the target it never reached stayed 5.2% away.

Do not misread

Do not read the August rally as the squeeze arriving late. It moved with Bitcoin's own 21.3% rise over the identical days — a market-wide move, five weeks after the fork, not a Cardano-specific resolution of a forecast that had already failed to resolve on its own terms.

  • Whether the 100K-100M ADA cohort specifically kept accumulating past its 13 Jul reading of more than 25.6B ADA — no single dated source tracks that exact band through August.
  • Whether the Dijkstra roadmap's Q4 2026 Leios target holds; Intersect's own account states the dates are targets, not guarantees.
  • Whether a future governance-ratified fork repeats Van Rossem's ~10-minute block-gap wrinkle, or whether the cause was identified and addressed.
