Executive summary · one-page brief

The Process Is the Odyssey

To play Odysseus in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, 55-year-old Matt Damon spent five months on an ordinary upper/lower strength split, then held it through a 91-day shoot. His trainer of four years, Gabe Stump, DPT, describes progressive overload, prepared meals and rest — not a secret regimen — aimed at a lean “tactician,” not a superhero. Damon has said, on the record, that he will not risk an extreme transformation again.

By the Numbers the trainer and the actor, in their own words

  • 5 monthsof prep before a 91-day shoot
  • 4–5×training days a week, in Damon's own basement gym
  • 8–10 setsper muscle group per week, with extra chest work
  • since 2022how long Dr. Stump has trained Damon

Two Accounts, Not One Number each figure, to its own interviewer

How firmWhatWho says so
ConfirmedGoal: lose about 10 lb of fat while keeping muscle. Bodyweight given as about 180 lb at the start of the five-month block, about 165 lb by the end.Dr. Gabe Stump, DPT, to Vogue (20 Jul 2026)
ConfirmedA longer personal baseline, and a single remembered moment: “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200 [lb], and I did that whole movie at 167 [lb]. And I haven’t been that light since high school.”Matt Damon, on the “New Heights” podcast, reported by Variety (7 Jan 2026)
Confirmed“If I would’ve put weight on, that would’ve been dangerous, and it’s not something I’ll do anymore. I was happy to do it earlier in my life.”Matt Damon, to People magazine, reported by Fox News (14 Jul 2026)

The Gap in the Trainer's Own Numbers 10 lb of fat, 15 lb of bodyweight

Dr. Stump's own numbers do not fully add up. The stated goal was 10 lb (4.5 kg) of fat lost; the stated bodyweight change was 15 lb (6.8 kg), from about 180 lb (81.6 kg) to about 165 lb (74.8 kg). If muscle was fully kept, as the goal states, the two figures should be close — instead about 5 lb (2.3 kg) of the total drop is not accounted for as fat. Vogue's article does not address the gap. It could be water, glycogen, some lean mass, or simply that “180”, “165” and “10” are Dr. Stump's own round recollections rather than measured figures — his own account hedges both bodyweight numbers with “around” but states the fat-loss goal as a flat number.

A Tactician, Not a Superhero the brief, relayed from Nolan

Director Christopher Nolan set the physical target, and it reached Dr. Stump secondhand: “[Odysseus] is not this buff super soldier — he’s more of a tactician,” Dr. Stump told Vogue. “He’s got this grizzly beard, and he looks really lean. You can see he’s still strong. He’s got good definition everywhere, but he’s not packed on.” That framing decided the training, not the other way round: because Damon “had the wind in his sails and started from a great foundation,” per Vogue, the five months were fine-tuning rather than a transformation from nothing. Vogue's own reporting adds the practical reason the work concentrated on chest, shoulders and arms: the costume design goes mostly sleeveless, an explicit break from the “swords-and-sandals” look, on a 173-minute film shot on IMAX 70mm.

Film & yearWhat changedDamon's own words
Courage Under Fire, 1996Extreme weight loss for Specialist Andrew Ilario. Figures vary by interview: 139 lb per a 2016 Reddit AMA; around 135 lb and a 50 lb, 100-day loss per a later compilation citing a 2022 BBC appearance.“I weighed 139 pounds in that movie… I went too far. I got sick and I wouldn’t do that again because it was just too much.”
The Informant!, 2009Gained about 30 lb to play whistleblower Mark Whitacre, confirmed directly by CNN. Damon later told Entertainment Weekly the gain came easily — “eating like crazy and drinking dark beer.”“It was very, very easy to gain the weight.”
The Odyssey, 2026A moderate, supervised fat loss, not an extreme change in either direction. Damon has said the alternative — gaining weight — would have been the dangerous one.“If I would’ve put weight on, that would’ve been dangerous, and it’s not something I’ll do anymore.”

Mon & ThuUpper bodyDumbbell bench press, supported rows, pull-ups, pull-downs, horizontal & vertical press, plus isolation work — biceps, triceps, flyes, reverse flyes.
Tue & FriLegsSquats and deadlifts feature; with no squat rack in Damon's home gym, per Tom's Guide, heavy Bulgarian split squats, trap-bar deadlifts and RDLs stood in for a barbell back squat.
WedCardio / metabolice.g. weighted-vest incline walking.
Sat & SunRecoveryTwo days off. Dr. Stump: “I didn’t really want to burn him out on any given workout” — rest is where the muscle rebuilds.

Detail beyond Vogue's piece comes from a separate, later interview: Tom's Guide's Sam Hopes spoke with Dr. Stump in early August. In a day, they targeted about eight movements, “mostly staying in that 8–12 range, although sometimes we’d go up to 15. Sometimes we’d go as low as 5–6 (reps) for strength work,” stopping with “two to three reps in reserve.” Equipment was basic by design: a trap bar, dumbbells up to 100 lb, and, in Dr. Stump's own words, “you’d be shocked at how crappy it is.”

The Writer Tried It Himself Vogue's Max Berlinger, not Damon

Half of Vogue's piece is Max Berlinger's own experiment, and its numbers belong to him, not Damon: a Planet Fitness membership ($15/month), 45–60 minute lifting sessions, and friends noticing a difference “in a week or two.” His honest finding was that training to failure is a different kind of tiring than cardio — sore for days rather than out of breath. His own conclusion, in his own words: “There is no magic bullet to get you in Greek god shape in 14 days… It’s about showing up consistently over time.”

What the Trainer's Own Words Give Away ordinary, on purpose

Bottom line

There is no protocol here that would not appear in any competent strength programme: an upper/lower split, progressive overload, prepared meals, rest, and two days off a week. The trainer's own word for the goal — a tactician, not a super soldier — is the tell.

In his own words

Berlinger's own words close the piece: people with visibly toned muscle “did not get that way by accident… it’s an Odyssey to get there.”
