Hogwarts Legacy and the Wizarding World

Anchored, Not Canon

More than forty million copies have been sold of a Hogwarts nobody can place. Hogwarts Legacy is set a century before Harry Potter, and its publisher’s own answer to where it sits is that the game is “anchored in Wizarding World lore” — a sentence read as yes it is canon by one outlet and as adjacent to it by another, four days apart, while a third reading the same document says no. Read the two official documents and the shape is plain: neither uses the word canon, or the word prequel, once. What they do is authorise.

  • 0occurrences of canon or prequel in the full text of the official FAQ and the official developer Q&A, counted this session
  • 1800sthe only period the publisher gives — four times in the FAQ, three in the Q&A. Every outlet read says the 1890s
  • 40 millionunits sold worldwide by 17 December 2025, on the publisher’s own announcement
  • 2026the HBO series premieres 25 December, billed as a faithful adaptation, with J.K. Rowling as an executive producer — the credit the game’s own FAQ says it does not have

ConfirmedThe FAQ states the relation twice and in two ways: Portkey games “are not direct adaptations of the books and films” but are “firmly rooted in the magical universe of the Wizarding World”, and this game “is not a direct adaptation” but “is anchored in Wizarding World lore”Official FAQ, hogwartslegacy.com
ConfirmedNeither official document uses the word canon or the word prequel, once. Both say “1800s” — four times and three times — and neither narrows it to a decadeCounted over the full text of both, 17 Sep 2026

ConfirmedOn the author: “J.K. Rowling was not involved in the creation of the game … This is not a new story from J.K. Asserted, not establishedThat “the earliest confirmed canonical Harry Potter work is set in 1927”, and that ancient magic is at most vaguely referenced in earlier material. 2017 to 2026 Two threads: what the licensor did, and what anybody concluded about it. The official FAQ itself is undated — it carries a 2024 copyright mark and nothing more.

  1. 2017Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment buys Avalanche Software from Disney, and establishes the Portkey Games label to manage the Wizarding World licence
  2. 25 Apr 2018Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is released. Players are already their own Hogwarts student, in a story set before the novels — five years before this game does the same thing
  3. 16 Sep 2020The game is announced at a PlayStation 5 event. The FAQ goes up with it, carrying the sentence about J.K. Rowling that is still on the page today
  4. 19 Jan 2022Screen Rant asks whether the game will be canon, more than a year before anyone can play it, and predicts the branching ending it has not seen
  5. 25 Jan 2023Wizarding World publishes the developer Q&A. Narrative lead Moira Squier: “We really wanted to pick a time period where there were no heroes, no Newt, no Harry — it’s you … It’s your own complete world”
  6. 10 Feb 2023Release on PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Older consoles follow on 5 May, the Nintendo Switch on 14 November
  7. 13–23 Feb 2023Three verdicts in eleven days, all reading the same FAQ: GGRecon says canon, Den of Geek says adjacent to it, Game Rant says not canon
  8. 6 Jun 2024The summer update puts the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest, until then a PlayStation exclusive, on every platform
  9. 5 Nov 2024Variety reports David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, saying the games team is coordinating big-picture storytelling in the sequel with the HBO series’ storylines. It is the first coordination of its kind on the record — and it is about the sequel
  10. 5 Jun 2025The Nintendo Switch 2 version ships alongside the console. Three months earlier, an unannounced story expansion and a Definitive Edition were cancelled
  11. 17 Dec 2025Warner Bros. Games announces more than 40 million units sold worldwide
  12. 25 Dec 2026Scheduled. The HBO Harry Potter series premieres, one book a season for a planned ten years, billed as a faithful adaptation, with J.K. Rowling among its executive producers

A licensing answer, read as a continuity answer What the publisher wrote, what it does not say, and what the game itself does to the question.

Six answers in the official FAQ bear on where the game sits, and their shape is the finding. Four of the things they say are negations: not a direct adaptation, not written by J.K. Rowling, not a new story from her, and — on whether Harry, Hermione or Ron appear — no, because the game is set before them. Two are about permission: her team was “collaborated closely with … on all aspects of the game”, and she “has entrusted the design and creation of the games to Warner Bros. Games”.

Not one states a continuity relation. Read as an answer to is this the same history, the document looks evasive. Read as an answer to who authorised this, it is complete, unambiguous and has not changed since 2020. That is the reading this page takes, and it is an inference, not a statement by anybody at Warner Bros. What follows from it is simply that the question the outlets are asking was never the question being answered.

  • 4things the FAQ says the game is not
  • 2things it says about who authorised it
  • 0statements of a continuity relation, and uses of the word canon

All four outlets are reading the same FAQ, and the sentence that decides it says anchored in Wizarding World lore. Only one of them reports it as the word canon: GGRecon opens “Yes, Hogwarts Legacy is canon to the rest of the Wizarding World”, quotes the answer accurately underneath, and closes “Unless said otherwise going forward, Hogwarts Legacy is indeed canon”. That is a substitution, not a quotation — and it is the only one of the four that treats the question as settled. The same piece puts the FAQ with Avalanche Software; the page’s own footer and its own publishing answer put it with Warner Bros. Games, under the Portkey Games label.

Den of Geek quotes the same answer, calls it “the thestral’s mouth”, and then declines to close the gap: the careful wording, it says, “does raise questions about whether or not we’re to believe that we’re supposed to retroactively assume that the events of Hogwarts Legacy could have eventually led to the events of the Harry Potter stories”. That is the question, stated exactly. Nothing published answers it.

  • “anchored”the word the publisher used
  • “canon”the word one outlet reported it as

The harder obstacle is not the wording. It is that the game is built so that no later work needs to know its outcome. The protagonist is made by the player, in a creator with no gender options, and is never named in the fiction. Their house is the player’s choice among all four, each with its own common room and its own quests. And the story ends on a branch — seal the ancient magic away, or take it.

Then the branch turns out to carry almost nothing. Professor Fig dies either way; the eulogy in the Great Hall happens either way; the O.W.L.s, the 100 house points and the House Cup follow either way. A later writer who had to say what happened in the 1890s would find nothing to contradict, because there is nothing there that differs. That is design, not oversight, and the publisher says so in its own two ways: the FAQ answers flatly that the game “does not have a morality system”, and the line it sells the game with is Live the Unwritten. Calling the two endings good and evil imports a frame the publisher declines.

  • no namethe protagonist is player-made, and unnamed in the fiction
  • 2endings, after which the same character dies and the same House Cup is won
  • 4houses, any of which is the protagonist’s
Who, and whenVerdictWhat it rests on
GGRecon, 13 Feb 2023It is canonThe FAQ’s anchored in Wizarding World lore, reported as the word canon, and attributed to the developer rather than to the publisher whose page it is
Den of Geek, 17 Feb 2023Adjacent to canonThe same sentence, quoted and then weighed; it names the retroactivity problem and leaves it open
Game Rant, 23 Feb 2023Not canonThat Rowling was not directly involved, plus the player-made protagonist. Its central passages are near-identical to the two pieces above and before it
Screen Rant, 19 Jan 2022Probably not canonRowling’s endorsement treated as a necessity, and a branching ending the writer could not yet have played. Same publisher as Game Rant

Three things the surrounding record supplies A label older than the game, a work in the same company that is treated differently, and the first coordination anybody has put on the record.

  • 2017

    The label, not the game

    Portkey Games

    • Warner Bros. created Portkey Games in 2017 to manage the Wizarding World licence, the same year it bought Avalanche Software from Disney
    • The label’s own description is that its games “place the player at the center of their own adventure”. A player-made protagonist is the house pattern, not this game’s problem
    • Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery did it in April 2018, also set before the novels. Four mobile titles had passed $1 billion in global revenue by October 2022
  • 2026

The control case, in the same company

    The HBO series

    • The Harry Potter television series is billed as a faithful adaptation of the books, one a season, planned across ten consecutive years
    • J.K. Rowling is an executive producer on it. The game’s own FAQ says she “was not involved in the creation of the game”
    • So the distinction the outlets are groping for is one the franchise itself draws — in its credits, and in whether a work is called an adaptation at all
  • 2024

    The first coordination on record

And it is about the sequel

    • David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety the games team had been “coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements” in the sequel with the HBO series’ storylines
    • Nothing comparable is on the record for the 2023 game. The sentence is about a sequel with no announced title, platform or date
    • In March 2025, an unannounced story expansion and a Definitive Edition were cancelled — reported second-hand here, and nothing read says what was in them

The scale is what makes the gap matter. More than 40 million copies on a budget estimated at $150 million; $850 million and 12 million copies in the first two weeks; $1 billion passed inside three months. Whatever else that is, it is not a marginal work — and it is the one nobody can place.

Which is why the interesting direction is forwards rather than backwards. Nothing in the published record retroactively fixes the 2023 game’s status, and nothing in it is likely to: the branch carries no consequence, and the protagonist has no name to put in a history. What the record does contain is a company saying, once, that a sequel is being written alongside a television series. If the game’s place ever gets settled, that is the shape it will be settled in — by a later work needing it to be true, rather than by anybody answering the question that has been asked since 2020.

  • $150 millionestimated production budget
  • $1 billionpassed within three months of release

What to hold, and how loosely The count is solid. The reading of it is this page’s, and is marked as such.

If somebody asks whether Hogwarts Legacy is canon, the honest answer is that no official document read this session uses the word, in either direction, and that the one which comes closest says the game is “anchored in Wizarding World lore” and set “before the time period” of the novels. That is a placement and a licence. It is not a ruling.

The temptation is to read the silence as evasion, and it may be; a company with a television series to sell has reasons not to tie itself to a game’s ending. But the simpler account fits everything read here: the document is answering a question about permission, which it answers completely, and was never asked to answer a question about history. The four outlets that reached four different verdicts were all reading a document about the first question for an answer to the second.

What a reader can carry away with no risk of being wrong: the game is set before the novels, the author did not write it and her office approved it, and the story is built so that nothing after it has to care how it ended.

What is established

The official FAQ’s answers on where the game sits, quoted here word for word; that neither it nor the official developer Q&A uses canon or prequel once; that both say the 1800s and never a decade; that the game has no morality system and one consequence-free ending choice; that J.K. Rowling is an executive producer on the HBO series and was, by the FAQ’s own words, not involved in the game.

What is this page’s reading, not anybody’s statement

That the FAQ is answering a licensing question rather than a continuity one; that the game is designed so no later work needs its outcome; and that the franchise’s own credits draw the distinction the outlets are reaching for. Each is an inference from the quotations above, and none is a position Warner Bros. has taken.

What would change the answer

A sequel or a screen work that needs the 1890s to have gone a particular way. The one sentence pointing that way is David Haddad’s, in November 2024, and it is about a sequel with no title, platform or date. Until something later depends on this story, the status stays exactly where the FAQ left it in 2020.
