POCO X8 Pro vs X8 Pro Max · executive brief

Same Screen, Different Phone

POCO's X8 Pro and X8 Pro Max look like one phone in two sizes. The manufacturer's own Taiwan spec sheets say otherwise: a chip a full tier apart, 30.8% more battery, Wi-Fi 7 and eSIM on the larger model only, and a street price that has moved three times since April. Both spec sheets, two independent Taiwan benchmark passes, and five months of Taiwan retail pricing settle where the two phones actually differ.

By the Numbers re-derived from manufacturer spec pages and independent Taiwan testing

  • +30.8%battery capacity, 6,500 → 8,500 mAh — the largest confirmed difference
  • 34.5–35.6%raw performance gain, across three independent AnTuTu tests, in a 1.1-point band
  • NT$2,200today's Taiwan street-price gap, matched 12GB/512GB on both phones
  • +8.2%heavier for that battery — 201.47 g → 218 g
  • 5months already on sale in Taiwan by the 2 Sep 2026 price check

What's Claimed, and How It Holds Up sorted by how well each figure is evidenced

StandingWhatDetail
ConfirmedThe hardware split aboveEvery row in the table above is confirmed at the manufacturer's own Taiwan spec pages for each model, cross-checked against GSMArena's independent listings for both phones.
ConfirmedA 34.5–35.6% AnTuTu gapThree separate AnTuTu v11 passes, on three different physical units, land in a 1.1-point band — GSMArena's own unit (+34.5%), SOGI's own review unit (+35.6%), and POCO's own launch-event figures as reported by the Taiwanese press (+35.1%).
ConfirmedThree dated Taiwan street-price snapshots8 Jul, 6 Aug and 2 Sep 2026, each named to its retailer-comparison platform and each dated on the page itself — see §2.
Confirmed, but not verifiable herePOCO's own “about two days” and launch-event AnTuTu figuresThe Pro Max's marketed “about two days” battery life and its launch-event AnTuTu score are the manufacturer's own figures, reported by the Taiwanese press; neither has been independently retested against that specific claim.
Confirmed, but not verifiable hereFour major Android upgrades, six years of security updatesReported for both models by one Taiwanese outlet at the launch. This commitment does not appear on either of Xiaomi's own specification pages for either phone, Taiwan or Global.
UnconfirmedWhy one Pro Max test unit read slower storage speedsOne reviewer's Pro Max unit measured roughly half the Pro's sequential storage speed despite an identical UFS 4.1 rating on both spec sheets; the reviewer itself calls this possibly a sample or firmware issue, not a settled fact about shipping units — see §4.

In Order announcement to today's price check

  1. 17 Mar 2026POCO announces the X8 Pro series globally: the X8 Pro, the X8 Pro Max, and a Pro-based “Iron Man Edition”.
  2. 1 Apr 2026Taiwan on-sale start, 10:00, via mi.com and named Taiwan e-commerce storefronts.
  3. 1–20 Apr 2026Launch discount: NT$1,000 off every configuration in the series.
  4. 8 Jun 2026SOGI 手機王 publishes its hands-on benchmark comparison of the two phones.
  5. 8 Jul 2026First dated Taiwan street-price snapshot: NT$9,290 (Pro, 8/256) and NT$12,490 (Pro Max, 12/256).
  6. 5 Aug 2026SOGI updates its June review with a second round of testing and pricing.
  7. 6 Aug 2026Second snapshot: Pro holds at NT$9,290; Pro Max rises NT$200 to NT$12,690.
  8. 1 Sep 2026POCO launches the F9 Pro/Ultra — a separate, higher tier that does not replace the X8 series.
  9. 2 Sep 2026Live Taiwan price check: NT$9,190 (Pro, 8/256) and NT$12,390 (Pro Max, 12/256); a used Pro Max lists at NT$11,900.

Two developments sit beside the X8 series without belonging to it. POCO's separate, newer F9 series launched on 1 Sep 2026, a day before the price snapshot above — it sits a tier above the X8 series and neither discontinues nor replaces it. And no Taiwan launch of a POCO X9 successor is on record as of 2 Sep 2026: the only related coverage is pre-release rumour for a different market, dated well into 2027.

What the Numbers Actually Say the real difference, and one price gap that shrinks under scrutiny

The two phones are not one design in two sizes. Xiaomi Taiwan's own spec pages put the Pro on the Dimensity 8500-Ultra and the Pro Max on the newer, smaller-process Dimensity 9500s — a real generation apart, not a clock-speed bump. Three independently run AnTuTu v11 passes, on three different physical units and from three different publishers, land the Pro Max between 34.5% and 35.6% ahead of the Pro. That is an unusually tight agreement for three separate benchmark runs, and it is the figure worth trusting over any single one of the three on its own.

Battery life is the one figure where two independent, named methods genuinely disagree. SOGI's own PCMark Work 3.0 test measured 14 h 43 min for the Pro against 19 h 15 min for the Pro Max — a 30.8% gain that lines up almost exactly with the raw battery-capacity increase. GSMArena's own blended “active use score” test, a different protocol entirely, measured 16 h 52 min against 25 h 22 min — a 50.4% gain, nearly two-thirds larger than SOGI's. Both are real, dated, attributed measurements on the same two phones. Read this as: the Pro Max's battery life is meaningfully longer by any measure, but exactly how much longer depends on what the test actually does with the phone.

  • NT$3,000launch-price gap at matched 12GB/512GB — 23.1% more for the Pro Max
  • NT$2,200today's gap, same matched spec — the premium narrowed, not the phones
  • NT$3,200gap if RAM is left unmatched — the cheapest Pro against the cheapest Pro Max

The comparison that is usually made is the wrong one

Comparing each phone's cheapest configuration puts an 8GB-RAM Pro against a 12GB-RAM Pro Max and calls the NT$3,200 difference the “Max premium”. Part of that gap is RAM, not chip tier or battery. Hold RAM and storage constant at 12GB/512GB on both, and the actual premium for the chip, the extra battery, Wi-Fi 7, eSIM and the ultrasonic sensor is NT$2,200 today — down from NT$3,000 at launch.

Two Findings That Cut Against the Spec Sheet both from single review units — reported, not generalised

The Pro Max has more cooling area than the Pro (5,800 mm² against 5,300 mm², per the manufacturer) and a newer, faster chip. SOGI's stress-test figures show it winning on raw output — 19,500 against 13,065 on the best loop — but losing on stability under sustained load: 66.4% against the Pro's 74.7%, meaning the Pro Max's scores fall further as the chip heats up over repeated runs. More cooling area did not translate into steadier sustained performance on this unit; it is reported as SOGI found it, on one phone of each model, not as a verdict on every unit sold.

The two main cameras carry an identical spec on paper — 50 MP, f/1.5, OIS — and an identical 8 MP ultrawide. Both manufacturer spec pages name a different sensor underneath: Sony's IMX882 on the Pro, POCO's own “Light Fusion 600” on the Pro Max. SOGI's own day-and-night sample comparison, shooting both phones side by side, found daylight results close enough that most viewers would not tell them apart, and only a modest edge for the Pro Max after dark. So the megapixel count hides a real hardware difference, and that difference is smaller in practice than the spec-sheet swap alone would suggest.

Which One, and Why what each phone is for, not which one wins

  • POCO X8 Pro — from NT$9,190

If your budget is capped and your battery needs are ordinary

    measured 14 h 43 min–16 h 52 min on two independent battery tests

    • The lightest and most one-handed of the two at 201.47 g, and NT$3,200 cheaper than the Max at its own cheapest configuration.
    • The Dimensity 8500-Ultra is a genuine flagship-adjacent chip on its own terms — not a lesser processor, a different tier.
    • Comes in an 8GB/256GB configuration the Pro Max does not offer at any price, plus an Iron Man Edition colourway unique to this model.
    • You give up Wi-Fi 7, eSIM, ultrasonic fingerprint sensing, the SGS durability certification, and a shallower tested water-resistance depth (1.5 m against 2 m).
  • POCO X8 Pro Max — from NT$12,390

If you want two-day battery life and next year's connectivity today

    measured 19 h 15 min–25 h 22 min on two independent battery tests

    • The only one of the two with Wi-Fi 7 and eSIM — both a real speed advantage on a Wi-Fi 7 router and genuine flexibility for a second, travel or work line.
    • A chip generation ahead by every benchmark that measured it, in a 1.1-point band across three independent AnTuTu passes.
    • An SGS 5-star durability certification and a deeper tested water-resistance depth (2 m against the Pro's 1.5 m) — the Pro carries no equivalent certification at all.
    • You pay NT$2,200 more at matched storage and RAM, and one test unit showed it throttling harder under sustained load than the Pro despite more cooling area.
  • Match RAM and storage before comparing price. NT$2,200 is the real premium for the Pro Max's extra battery, chip tier and connectivity, at 12GB/512GB on both. NT$3,200 is what you pay if you also want more RAM than the Pro's cheapest configuration offers.
  • Buy from an authorised channel — mi.com's own Taiwan storefront, or an authorised dealer through SOGI's comparison-shopping platform — not an unverified listing. A second-hand Pro Max at NT$11,900, only NT$490 under a brand-new one at today's street price, is not the bargain it looks like.
  • Treat every battery-life figure as method-specific, not absolute. The Pro Max measured anywhere from 30.8% to 50.4% ahead of the Pro depending on which independent test ran it; both are real, and neither is “the” number.

What is not settled

Neither phone is better in general. Which one suits you depends on what you weigh — battery, connectivity and durability against price and weight — and the cards above say which weighting points where. POCO's own “about two days” battery claim and its update commitment also remain unconfirmed: the first is a manufacturer figure with no published test behind it, and the second appears in Taiwanese launch coverage but on neither Xiaomi Taiwan's nor Xiaomi Global's specification pages for either phone.
